The Easton Volunteer Fire Department had their hands full at the Easton High School in southern Maryland, where there was a reported fire that broke out on a stovetop inside one of the rooms.
Investigators say that the custodial staff was moving things out of the classroom during summer break shortly before 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning when they left an electronic device on top of a stop top, inadvertently turning on the top burning.
Moments later, the fire began spreading, and an alarm was activated, alerting the staff inside the building at the time to the swiftly spreading flames.
It took a team of nearly 60 firefighters more than an hour and a half to get the flames under control, prompting the sounding of a second alarm.
Officials noted that crews were assisted by an overhead sprinkler that activated. The damage, estimated at approximately $3,000, was contained to a single classroom through the firefighters' efforts.
No injuries were reported.
